I

On the other side of the world, at the extreme opposite of the sweet fragrance of Tiaré flowers, far away from Polynesian shores & women dressed with bright loincloths, there’s a kingdom sculpted by the winds and the Atlantic, a long peninsula that marks the end of European continent; it’s the western part of France: Brittany. This “kingdom” where from the age of 7, my small hand in my grandfather’s comforting grip, my legs wobbling on the rocky promontory of “La Pointe du Raz” (the latest extremity of the cape offering a breathtaking panorama) I used to repeat, almost every summer : “One day I will go further than this tiny island over there, GrandPa ! One day, I’ll go beyond the horizon !

Horizon - Bretagne

Obviously my words thrown into the waves & the wind had been engraved in the granite rock! Indeed, from savannas of Tanzania to Amazonia shores, from Indonesian islands to French Polynesia the half-Blood-Breton that I am is still an avid adventurer, a curious explorer always determined to go “Beyond“! Between two distant journeys & my Parisian life, there’s Brittany, that indomitable & wild beauty which at first sight would seem harsh due to its capricious weather and its chaotic environment but reveals a generous, sincere & warm heart, like its residents! Its long shores lined with beautiful beaches, its forests where we wouldn’t be surprised to meet a stoat, an old druid or a descendant of Morgan le Fay, Brittany is a place where Land, Air & Sea are mixed in perfect harmony and from this symbiosis comes a vital Energy and a total Rejuvenation !

Before to end this long preamble I must remind you my mantra (as an old refrain;) : forget the travel guides, let Chance take its course ! Don’t try to plan everything and let yourself be seduced by these little roads to the Unknown! And if you feel lost…perfect ! Adventure is precisely about going out of your comfort zone & ignoring an itinerary imposed by a GPS tracking. Here, in Brittany, you invariably end up on a sparkling beach, a lovely village at the edge of a green valley, a small church facing a proud Dolmen, an old fisherman delighted to talk about all and nothing, some locals happy to share a bowl of cider.

In short, let it be! It’s often in the Unpredictable & the Unexpected that we have the best surprises and unforgettable memories !

*Bowl of cider & Bowl of fresh air in the Gulf of Morbihan! When I get tired of Paris and its frantic atmosphere, its traffic jams & fury, I run away ! Among my favourite  destinations for a “Iodine cure” and not far away of Paris, there’s my Far West: Brittany 😉 It takes 3 hours by TGV only. I often go to the Finistere where’s my dad is living but between Rennes and the extreme point called “la Pointe du Raz”, it’s plenty of choices ! As far as I am concerned and for this time I gave myself a week in the Morbihan where I booked 3 nights in the Gulf and 3 nights near Lorient.

Locmariaquer - Bretagne

For my first destination, I have decided to stay in the little town of “Locmariaquer” located 15 km away  from the TGV station (Auray). I love this place both by its lovely seascapes and its fabulous micro-climate. Having regards a friend of mine which comes often, I have decided to try a guesthouse with a fantastic view, called “Rêves de Mer” (Ocean’s Dreams) … it sounds full of good vibes!

As soon as I arrive in the trainstration I feel refreshed by the breeze that brings the smell of the sea. The owner of the guesthouse has a kind face and his hearty welcome assures me of a happy stay. When I arrive at the guesthouse, I’m immediately seduced by its location with a stunning view on the gulf. My room is delicately decorated, each detail having been scrupulously chosen with care. From my private terrace I can admire a panorama with a real painting charm: some small islands that seem to float in the pink morning and I thank the Celtic god of Luck for giving me a day that promises to be beautifully sunny! Anne and Olivier – the owners – let me choose my dinner menu & suggest some addresses where to go for lunch. Having previously mentioned that I wanted a bike, they provided me one of their own & offering me an excellent coffee with a homemade Kouign-aman cake. Delicious breakfast before the effort to reach Locmariaquer located 20 minutes away from the guesthouse. I decide to visit the surroundings and as I’m pedaling as fast as I can, I miss an intersection and arrive in a fabulous place full of oyster fields, I make a pause & take pics of the lovely scenery….There’s nobody, except cows & horses…. I feel serene in this peaceful atmosphere. Indeed, How could we stress in that bucolic and pastoral setting ? In that place I had 3 marvellous days with a splendid weather, some fabulous (sea)food dinners and a true rest… after that, I feel rejuvenated !

Must-see Places :

*Get tanned at St Pierre beach and go to the bar “Les Huitres d’Evariste”, its extraordinary location & fresh products will delight you!  For a real french “crepe”, go at “La Vahiné” both for its charming view & its delicious french recipes

*Larmor-Baden: take a walk along the charming little harbor & have a drink at “Chez Lucien”, a remarkable location facing the sunset.

Last Advice : It’s forbidden to leave the Gulf without a visit in the charming Ile-aux-Moines & Ile-d’Arz islands!

III

An enchanted getaway near Lorient ! After 3 days in the gulf it’s about time to head my second destination. As I was more than satisfied by the suggestions proposed by “Reva Dreams Travel” agency during my holidays in Polynesia, I’ve choosen a villa in a tiny village named Kerroc’h – near Ploemeur. The house is supposed to fulfill all my wishes with a beautiful view; a peaceful atmosphere; 3 rooms to invite some friends.  I have half an hour to reach Lorient so I read the description again and if I trust -almost blindly- this agency I also have a suspicious nature… “it sounds too good to be true !

The day should be sunny despite some few clouds, I feel optimistic and one more time I thank my luck for this pleasant & constant weather. When I arrive in Kerroc’h village I’m right away charmed by the typical harbor with its colorful boats; my delight rises gradually when I see a small beach overhanged by only one building that embraced the panorama, that’s the “Villa Littorine”, my final destination.

Port de Kerroc'h - Bretagne

Above the fact that the house is the opposite of the Breton style, I feel amazed by the mastery of the architect that managed the modernity with good taste and intelligence. Indeed, the large building of 250 square meters fits perfectly into Nature. Its modern design embrace the curves of the coastline with beauty. From all parts of the house we can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view and it has been carefully designed respecting the environment (with a scrupulous selection of eco-friendly equipments and standarts) I mentally congratulate the owner for this choise and the perfect result !

The smallest details are here with the sincere desire to satisfy everyone’s tastes. All the house is decorated with an elegant sobriety and its huge garden of 5000 square meters runs directly into the beach. This seaside property is opens to all beach pleasures. Its strategic position is perfect for cultural visits or various sporting activities: bicycle rental in Lomener and Larmor-Plage; golf at Plœmeur-Océan or Queven village; horse riding at “Lann Er Roch Equestrian Centre”; surfing lessons in Fort-Bloqué near Lorient…And if you’re a FAN about Gastronomy (like me! 😉 the Chef Philippe Le Lay can give cooking lessons or prepare your meals right here in the villa ! (If he couldn’t on the dates of your stay, I propose you 5 recipes with local products.

To end this experience… We had a perfect time in the “Villa Littorine” and I think to come back, sooner & later! Indeed, this house is like the protective shell of the marine sea gastropod “periwinkle” (“Littorine” in french 😉 so it’s a luxurious cocoon, in all seasons!

Must-see places :

Everyone knows “La cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly” and it’s not a priority except if you’re a die-hard fan sailing ! Lorient offers many various activities but I suggest to spend a day on the beautiful “Ile de Groix” which definitely worth a visit ! Finish your day at “TY BEUDEFF bistro” – a legendary institution !

* Plœmeur: the gourmet that I am recommend you the “Crêperie entre Amie”.

For your recipes with blue lobster, a seafood, a fresh fish (red mullet;) there’s only one shop & excellent: “Aux Délices de l’Océan” located in the heart of the village.

*You must visit the lovely villages of Moëlan-sur-mer & Riec-sur-Belon famous for their oyster production (you can lunch on the spot, enjoying the lovely view)

* A Visit to the splendid city of Pont-Aven is highly recommended (and if it rains…it happens! 😉 Discover its marvellous Museum. Gauguin used to live there & as he said: “I love Brittany, I find the wild, the primitive. When my hooves resonate on this granite floor, I hear the dull, matte and powerful sound I seek in painting

Ponton - Bretagne

So… Vakañsoù Mat! (Enjoy your stay- in Breton language)
